Thorleif Petterson honored at Sånga Säby

Professor Thorleif Petterson has been recently honored for his long scientific and academic trajectory and his valuable contribution to the World Values Survey and European Values Surveys. The tribute was done last June at Sånga Säby during the presentation of the book "Religion, Democratic Values and Political Conflict", edited by Yilmaz Esmer, Hans-Dieter Klingemann and Bi Puranen.

Thorleif Pettersson has a long and successful academic carrier behind him with a professorship at Uppsala University, Sweden, in the Sociology of religion (1988– 2008) and as a senior Researcher at Ersta-sköndal högskola, Stockholm and Uppsala. Thorleif Pettersson has an impressive network also outside the universities. He is one of the key persons in the research network World Values Survey (WVS) and he has an impressive academic production including not only classical sociology of religion but also broader works in social science, often discussing basic values, might it be on culture, security and a sustainable development or about globalization, value change and generations. His great interest in developing the methodology of survey research has led him into new research territories like the issue of a north-south divide in basic value profiles within Europe.

The book “Religion, Democratic Values and Political Conflict”, Festschrift in honour of Thorleif Pettersson, (edited by Yilmaz Esmer, Hans-Dieter Klingemann and Bi Puranen) includes a Tabula Gratulatoria for Thorleif Petterson and an extended chapter with a summary of his work.  It will be a part of Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis in the series Psychologica et Sociologica Religionum, nr 23 (2009). The Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation has supported the printing of the book.

The book itself is organized in 3 parts:

  • Part I: Religion, secular education and equality
  • Part II: Democratization, visions of democracy and good governance
  • Part III: Political values, war and peace
